Enabling financial and cultural change in the Diocese of Sheffield

Following an earlier review of the Diocese’s central services, I worked as a transformation manager to help the organisation take the next steps towards fully aligning each team and area of work with its strategic vision.

Who: The Diocese of Sheffield

The challenge: With more than 30 recommendations from the service review to put into practice, one of my first tasks was writing a detailed change plan. As the possibility of redundancies was included in the recommendations, this work involved particularly mindful management of HR processes and one-to-one coaching on leadership styles and skills.

The solution: Tip-top project management and communications skills were needed as the recommendations I was helping put into practice covered a broad range of areas, from redefining job descriptions to writing and recruiting to new posts, setting up a new resource team and re-organising office layout, thus involving large numbers of staff and senior leaders.  In order to better understand the culture of the organisation, I looked for ways to help me identify opportunities for informing and involving staff.  Part of that process involved seeking approval of my recommendations from the Bishop’s Council.


  • Co-ordinated the work of an Implementation Group, ensuring timely completion of all tasks and project plans
  • Helped recruit a new Communications Manager
  • Drafted regular updates for staff and other stakeholders
