Action planning with IIED’s communications team

Using both communications knowledge and facilitation skills, I have organised and run a number of team away days for the International Institute for Environment and Development’s (IIED) communications team. One of my favourites was helping to reinvigorate team members by refocusing on their vital role within the organisation.

Who: International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)

The challenge: Organise and facilitate team away days for the Communications Team.  The goals vary and often include helping team members realise how essential their work is to the organisation’s overall success and to identify and plan for several goals to further strengthen their work and its impact.

The solution: In partnership with the Team Director, I create the agendas, mixing fun with serious, all of which focus on the task at hand – recognising the multitude of skills within the group and helping team members see the different roles and their interaction as parts of a larger function – as a fundamental component of the organisation’s achievements.

Outcomes:

  • Helping the team rediscover their enjoyment of communications work and reconnect with the talented individuals they work with, yet rarely have time to relax with
  • Agreeing goals to be worked on as a priority in strengthening their team’s impact on the organisation’s success
  • Facilitating a better understanding by the team members of the indispensible nature of their work in relation to the rest of the organisation

When: various, including February 2013

I would heartily recommend Alison! She has facilitated two Communications Team awaydays and provides a very warm combination of good humour, firmness, creativity and timekeeping.  We always get a lot done when Alison’s in charge, and it feels like we have good fun as well.Liz Carlile, IIED Director of Communications
